Password Change Procedure
Ryerson security policies demand that network passwords be changed annually. Please follow the steps below before your password expires to prevent your network account from being locked out and thus leaving you without access to the network, email, and other applications. If your password has already expired, you cannot use a wireless connection to change your password. In the case of expired passwords, you must connect via a network cable.
If you need immediate assistance, please call the Ryerson IT HelpDesk at 630-758-2214.
Guidelines for creating strong passwords
Passwords must be at least twelve characters in length and contain at least three of the following four classes:
Contain characters from three of the following four categories:
- English uppercase characters (A through Z)
- English lowercase characters (a through z)
- Base 10 digits (0 through 9)
- Non-alphabetic characters (for example, !, $, #, %)
The new password policy is based on a point scale. A normal word in the dictionary is given 1 point, and any remaining unique characters is given 1 point. You need a total of 5 points for your new password to be accepted.
For example:
ChicagoBears85 will be rejected because Chicago (1 point) + Bears (1 point) +8 (1 point) 5 (1 point) = 4 points.
Ch1c@g0B3@r$85 will also be rejected because Ch1c@g0B3@r$85 will be converted to ChicagoBears85 which is still only 4 points.
ChicagoBears1985 will be accepted because Chicago (1 point) + Bears (1 point) + 1 (1 point) + 9 (1 point) + 8 (1 point) + 5 (1 point) = 6 points.
